In My House

Being Present

Picture1

I recently read this quote and it really hit home for me. I definitely struggle being present with my daughter. It is not that I don’t enjoy my time with her, but I always feel my To Do List tapping on my shoulder. When I’m playing with her in the evening or feeding her dinner, I am often thinking about something that happened at work that day or pondering the long list of household chores I need to do as soon as she goes to sleep.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I’m posting this quote here to remind myself (and anyone else who needs this advice) to take a deep breath and really be present during story time, meal time, bath time, or any of those other moments with our little ones. They won’t be little for long.

  1. I struggle with this daily. What a perfect mantra to adopt. Nearly every morning I find myself forcing the little people to “hurry-up” so I can arrive early to work to get just a few more emails taken care of before the craziness of the day sets in. Why oh why?!! Everywhere you turn there is a reference to the fact that children feed off of their parents cues to direct their own actions. Maybe we as parents should start taking the cues from the children. Thank you for the reminder.

  2. Yes, yes, yes! Just like Josh, I struggle with this daily. I want to give my son 25 hours of my day, but I also want to accomplish other long term things for his benefit and happiness. It’s such a balancing act and I simply pray for strength to know when to pick him up and lay other things down. Love this! Thanks for sharing and making me feel like I’m not alone!

  3. I used to struggle with this too but now I realize they weren’t little for long. When they become teens, they won’t want you in their life!

  4. This is so true. I sometimes think people are more interested in giving their children “things” rather than time. You are off to a great start my girl!!
