My name is Katie. I live in a teeny, tiny town. I love to learn, travel, and explore. My husband is a small-town boy and both an optometrist and an optimist. He’s also the most patient person I have ever met.

I wrote professionally for a while as a newspaper reporter and later as a corporate communicator before landing in another field of work. I started this blog as a creative outlet and a chance to continue my first love: Writing. (My other loves in no particular order are: My miniature schnauzer, my daughters, my husband, Diet Pepsi, Metallica, feminist literature, sushi, pedicures, and traveling.)

The name A House with Character came about because my husband often teases me about my love for older houses with what I call “character.” If we drive by a Victorian with a unique color scheme, he sarcastically, yet lovingly, says: “Ah, look at that character.”

I live in a cottage-style home built in the mid-1940s. Although it is a work in progress like so many things in my life are, I love the original elements like the brick fireplace, hardwood floors, and blue metal bath tub, which will probably get its own blog post in the very near future.

This blog’s name refers to both aesthetic character and the individual character of the family, friends, and pets I am so blessed to have in my home. It’s not fancy, but it’s real.
